Lights, camera and Blog!

Ever wished that you could freeze time at a particular point in your life? Silly question. Of course you have! There are these precious moments of perfection, fleeting moments really, that you want to capture and store in a jar and sprinkle it with fairy dust so that it never goes missing. But it’s surprising and downright insulting to those precious memories, how fast your brain starts to forget them. Not all at once, but over time, the picture gets hazy, a few details are missed. You think back ‘Did that happen on a Saturday or a Friday?’ or ‘Was I at home when I got the call?’ or ‘Was it in September?’ Eventually you are left with a shadow of the memory, that can never match up to its true form. But we can’t freeze time. Period.

Which is why most of us go click-click-crazy and snap pictures of anything and everything that we hold close to our heart. Sometimes I’m frustrated with the number of pictures I’ve accumulated over the years (anyone else a hoarder?). But the little jolts of recollections that you get when you go through them is a feeling like none other. That’s exactly what my blog has become to me. A book of memories, a scrapbook, a portfolio, a depository of everything good, weird and beautiful. It’s no surprise that when I need to recollect the date of some event or some place I’ve been to, I scroll back through my blog and search for it!

So I decided to dedicate this post to my (camera) trigger happy self, and my beloved camera. In keeping with the theme, I wore this bright orange, camera print shift dress. They are the easiest to wear, most versatile and easiest to accessorize. The moment I saw this fabric I knew I wanted to make something out of it, because the print looked so cute! Take a look at the pictures while I take another walk through memory lane! 🙂

There’s a reason I am fascinated by beaches. The very thing that is considered the epitome of soothing, calm and serene can, in an instant, turn into the most violent, merciless and relentless being (so to speak) ever. When you look at a calm sea, it is next to impossible to imagine those gentle waves as being ruthless and stormy, trashing about, threatening to plunge anything in their path into its depths. The calm before the storm, the calm after the storm and all that in between. It’s a miraculous transformation!

Quite like some people’s (by which I obviously mean me) moods. Some people have the most deceivingly calm exterior! Everything is sweet and rosy on the surface but you never know what kind of fierce volcanic eruption is about to happen. Occasionally you might see a few bubbles rising up to the surface but before you can look again, there are gentle ripples in the water and you are left thinking your eyes are playing tricks on you. Its only after the eruption happens and the water gets boiling hot with fire balls raining down on you that you realize you have sorely underestimated the person! Yeah we are one of a kind. And not easy to handle 😉

Anyway, this skirt is the fourth of my designs, which I wore on one such evening for dinner by the beach. One moment it was a lazy, peaceful evening with the sea breeze blowing  and delicious hot food in front of us. And five minutes later we were all shivering and disheveled with hair that looked like a bird’s nest munching on soggy pasta. The only good thing about that night was that I got to debut my self-designed printed pencil skirt and later snuggle in bed with a coffee in hand.

I am the last person to follow fashion trends. No. Like literally the last person. So I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this pencil skirt which I’d designed months back happened to be ‘the’ color of the year. A skirt in a color that reminds you of sunsets splashed with random colors of hot pinks, reds with hints of purple, a pretty lace blouse and comfy flats and you are all set for an evening by the beach!

FAS style #3 + Shwa Handbags

FAS, Fashion, Look of the Day, thoughts
What do you get when two sassy young women, one with with a passion for consumer behavior and the other with a love for entrepreneurial projects, and both with a flair for design, come together? An innovative brand with a beautiful compilation of Handbags with secrets!

Shwa handbags, is a store based in Mumbai and is founded by Ira Jhangiani and Chandni Nihalani. They decided to design handbags with some character (given how girls go ga-ga over their bags and carry their world in it and all!) by having a unique little secret in each bag. The first collection is called Grey’s Anatomy – Season1“. Just to keep things interesting they added a little surprise in each of the bags. You’ll find things right from key finders, pepper spays, bag lights, portable charges, to quick-fix lip glosses, make up pouches and other little essentials.

Soon to launch is their Winter/Festive 2013 collection which is inspired by two things.
1) This is “Season 2, Gossip Girl” which means you can expect the bags to be right on trend, youthful and vibrant. Each bag is named after a character in the show, so there’s your chance of having Chuck Bass on your arm! 😉

2) Season 2’s theme is also inspired by the book “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne which is all about controlling our destiny with the Law of Attraction and positive thinking.

Chandni, one of the co-founders is also a modern day Tarot Reader. So with her awareness of this art, each handbag in Season 2 comes with a Tarot Card inside, which is meant to attract positive energy into our lives. Now whether you are a believer or not, its always nice to have a “something positive” with you all the time. If I am in a lousy mood and I happen to find a “STRENGTH” card for finding inner strength or a “SUN” card for happiness… I ain’t complaining!

So let’s go ahead and meet the characters shall we?

The one am carrying below is “Callie” from “Grey’s Anatomy – Season 1”. I don’t watch the show anymore, but the bag – I love!

On a side note, for someone who doesn’t know abc’s of stitching, I am very happy with the results of all three of my…ummm… trials (‘designs’ would be a bit too presumptuous!). The latest is this lemon yellow polka dotted circle skirt. More ‘designs’ to (hopefully) come soon!

First Avenue Style #2: The Maxi skirt

creativity, DIY, FAS, Fashion, Look of the Day, Musings
Black. The color of darkness. The color of fear. The color that makes you envision something sinister and evil. A black heart, ruthless and unforgiving. Black magic, ominous and threatening. Black death, deadly and horrific. The Black wind, mysterious and possessing.

Black. The color of a freshly wiped black board on a new school day. A black stallion, powerful and majestic. Long black hair, smooth, shiny and beautiful. Black diamonds, rare, exquisite and expensive. Black night sky, velvety and mesmerizing. A sleek black car, empowering and classic. A little black dress, elegant and graceful.

Black, the paradox color. The color of evil and pride. The color of rejection and resourcefulness.
Blackmail. Black-belt
Black sheep. Black coffee.

The color of power, of control. The color of the hidden, the secretive and the unknown. The barrier, hiding feelings, building walls, shrouding everything that it surrounds that it all seems to vanish into shadows. Black, authoritative and uptight. The color of self-control and confidence. The color of independence and strong will. Black, conventional and conservative; sophisticated and dignified. Black, the intriguing temptress.

Black the end. The end becomes a beginning. Black, a new beginning.

One color. Two sides. The good, the bad. So the same applies to people, yes?

I’ve been wanting a blue maxi skirt for so long but as always, all my attempts at searching for one proved to be futile. It was never the right shade or the right price so I decided to just make one myself and get it over with! And I absolutely love the result! A word of caution about these shoes. I love them, the color, the design, everything but it has the most uncomfortably designed strap. It could be that its just this piece that is faulty or maybe this design. This is just my second wear and with every five steps that I take (literally exactly five steps), it snaps off and I need to stop and buckle it again. Extremely annoying to do that. And the strap has already started fraying at the edges. Another couple of wears and I can see it coming off completely. So a word of caution for anyone wanting to purchase these. Like I said the design is really bad so I’ll probably get it changed to a regular old buckle because other than that they are super comfy and cute. Done by None has really some really trendy and innovative designs but definitely need to improve on their quality!

First Avenue Style: Printed Skirt

creativity, FAS, Fashion, Look of the Day
Dreadful internet connection problems , rain playing havoc and spoiling outfit shoots, bad lighting conditions, and when all is well and perfect – a missing photographer. Is there no end to this fashion girl’s problems? *insert heavy dramatic voice* Why? Why? Why? Sadly I have no answer. In-spite of these major problems of this major drama queen, we shall battle on,  and not give up. Next time, I don’t care if I get drenched in the downpour or blown away in the wind – when I want me some photos, am gonna get me some. Period.

Now that my little rant is over, these are the few pics that I could manage to salvage. We were checking the lighting, location and going about all the ‘pre-shoot’ work before the rain came down. So these are the only pics I have as of now. I was too excited to show off my self-designed skirt to wait another week for a proper photo shoot, so here goes! Trust me when I tell you that it is hard to shop for clothes when you have long legs. Skirts and shorts end up being shorter than what you expected or what you saw on the model. Minis become micro minis, middies become knee length and long flowl-y skirt become awkward length skirts :/  Anyway, like all things I design and create, first and foremost I need to name it (major OCD). So in case you still haven’t understood what First Avenue Style (FAS in short) means, its self-designed 😉

Keeping it short for now, hope you like it!  🙂
