Top picks from sheinside.com

The best part about Hyderabad’s winter is that it is the perfect amount of ‘chilly’ for me. I am the kind of person who feels cold at the slightest drop in temperature so living in a city with extremely cold winters (like Delhi or anywhere up North) is a big no-no for me. It’s all about cozy sweaters and sipping hot drinks but after a while (read: a week) I can’t stand it anymore. So yes, sleeping in the same room as me with the air conditioning on, is a constant battle of finding the ‘right temperature’ to please both parties and in short an absolute nightmare for most people!
Here are some of my favorite picks from sheinside.com to add a little warmth and color to my wardrobe this winder!

I really can’t ever do without greys and blacks, so that’s the first thing that goes into my shopping bag. Just to keep it a little colorful, my next picks are a bright colorful cardigan and a more subtle pastel blue sweater. The latter’s color is so soothing and perfect for our winters.

I’ve been wanting a black ripped jeans since forever but for some reason, every time I set out to search and buy one, I end up purchasing anything and everything except that (sounds familiar?). Also I’m still big on midi skirts, and the white floral one is simply too cute to pass on. If there’s something that is a must in every wardrobe then that is a faux leather (say NO to leather) skirt/pant and drawstring trousers. Whether it’s summer, winter or any season, you can’t deny how comfortable they are!

The round clock bag is something we’ve been seeing a lot lately and why not!? It’s quirky and cute. Being an absolute lover of gold jewelry, my next two picks – the chunky layered necklace and the entwined bracelet, were a no-brainer. Lastly adding a pop of color with some delicate and intricately designed chandelier earrings!

The Forever Trends

Blogging, Fashion, trends
What goes around always comes around in fashion, sometimes in the exact same way or sometimes with a slight twist or addition of its own catering to the changing audience. But there’s no denying that trends that were ‘in’ in the 90’s like crop tops and overalls or the 70’s bell bottomed trousers and retro looks have all been churned out again. I have never been that keen on following trends mainly because I look at my blog, my life and my style as something very personal rather than fashion forward. Yes it’s always fun to try out new stuff and get out of your comfort zone but not to the point of following trends blindly to the ‘T’. Having said that, there are few trends that never go out of style and have become wardrobe staples. Keep these in your closet and you’ll never have to worry about the what do I wear syndrome!

Stripes: Ever since I first started style blogging about three or four years ago, I’ve been hearing that stripes are the best thing ever to happen to fashionkind. Well it’s true. I haven’t come across anything else that is so versatile and chic at the same time.

Polka dots: A polka dot dress automatically makes you feel all lady-like and a polka dot top or a shirt or even a skirt is just so cute and feminine.

source                                                             source

Denim on Denim: From being labeled as the biggest fashion faux pas thanks to a number of public fashion crimes committed on its name, it has been given a second chance and successfully emerged as a favorite trend.

All whites: If you can leave aside the terrifying thought of spilling something or getting it dirty or being a total klutz while eating your favorite burger, an all white outfit looks sophisticated as hell. There’s no cooler and simpler way to dress than to go white head to toe.

Florals: Flowers are pretty. Period. Whether it’s in your garden or on your table in a vase or a bouquet in your hand or on either side of the road during a scenic drive OR on your clothes – they just look pretty and make your day so much better. I challenge you to wear a floral dress and be grumpy the whole day. Can’t do it.. can ya?!

Maxi skirts/dresses: Whoever invented these, a million girls around the world are fervently offering their thanks to you. It looks flattering on every body type. It can be dressed up or dressed down. It’s one of the most comfortable attires. It comes with pleats, it comes in crushed cotton, it comes in flowy chiffon, it comes in a riot of colors and it is perfect for so many occasions!

Black and white: The simplest pairing of two colors and it couldn’t look any more perfect.

Perfect skinny jeans: No matter how many varieties of trousers we try – printed, palazzo, sports luxe – a perfect pair of skinny jeans that fits you like a dream is a must have in our closet! It’s evergreen and never lets you down when you need a quick outfit

Monsoon Challenge at Inorbit Mall

Blogging, event, Fashion, hyderabad, story, video
Last month I was invited by InOrbit mall, along with a couple of other bloggers, to take part in a fun challenge. InOrbit is one mall where you’ll find all your favorite brands under one roof, making it easy to put together a whole head-to-toe outfit. Since almost every store and brand had launched their monsoon collection, we were given a task of putting together a whole new Monsoon Look based on a theme of our choice. The slight twist was that we were given a budget of Rs.5000 and a limited time of an hour and a half only! I’ve always been a fast shopper and decision maker so I was pretty confident that I would finish way before the time limit. But it’s just not that easy, specially when you have the camera crew following you everywhere, filming your every move, and throwing questions at you right in the middle of deciding between between a high-low dress or printed pants. Tough decisions eh?

Nonetheless it was really fun to have met some other cool bloggers Swati (The Rickrack project) and Sangeeta(The Lipstick Addict), and to have been dashing in and out of stores with a camera guy in tow, much to the amusement of other shoppers!

For me monsoons are all about going bright on colors and light on accessories. So I decided to go for a boho-casual look by keeping it very simple. After a lot of hunting in Max, Globus, Lifestyle, Chemistry and other stores, I finally picked a bright red kaftan top from AND. To let the color of the top stand out, I picked a monochrome houndstooth print pant from Lifestyle (which was one size bigger but I got it altered now). Finished the look with simple charcoal grey sandals from Shopper’s Stop and a big turquoise statement ring and silver midi rings from Accessorize.

Thanks to InOrbit mall for hosting a fun event and to fellow bloggers who added to the madness! 🙂

Ever wished that you could freeze time at a particular point in your life? Silly question. Of course you have! There are these precious moments of perfection, fleeting moments really, that you want to capture and store in a jar and sprinkle it with fairy dust so that it never goes missing. But it’s surprising and downright insulting to those precious memories, how fast your brain starts to forget them. Not all at once, but over time, the picture gets hazy, a few details are missed. You think back ‘Did that happen on a Saturday or a Friday?’ or ‘Was I at home when I got the call?’ or ‘Was it in September?’ Eventually you are left with a shadow of the memory, that can never match up to its true form. But we can’t freeze time. Period.

Which is why most of us go click-click-crazy and snap pictures of anything and everything that we hold close to our heart. Sometimes I’m frustrated with the number of pictures I’ve accumulated over the years (anyone else a hoarder?). But the little jolts of recollections that you get when you go through them is a feeling like none other. That’s exactly what my blog has become to me. A book of memories, a scrapbook, a portfolio, a depository of everything good, weird and beautiful. It’s no surprise that when I need to recollect the date of some event or some place I’ve been to, I scroll back through my blog and search for it!

So I decided to dedicate this post to my (camera) trigger happy self, and my beloved camera. In keeping with the theme, I wore this bright orange, camera print shift dress. They are the easiest to wear, most versatile and easiest to accessorize. The moment I saw this fabric I knew I wanted to make something out of it, because the print looked so cute! Take a look at the pictures while I take another walk through memory lane! 🙂

Evening soiree

Blogging, creativity, Fashion, Look of the Day
One of the best things about blogging is the insane number of talented people that you come across. Even though we are all just fashion bloggers on the surface, everybody is good at a minimum of two things or more. Writing, styling, designing, DIY’s… the list is just endless! Inspiration hits you from every angle and appreciation floods every sense of yours. It’s a feeling that you can understand if and only if you are part of the blogging community. The way you connect and click with total strangers over common grounds is fascinating and thrilling. Art of every form requires appreciation and only a true artist will whole heartedly applaud art without any form of competitiveness or jealousy. Because art cannot be defined. It is not owned by any single person nor can it be replicated by every other person. It is something unique to each individual, which makes it personal and universal at the same time.

As you can see I am in one of those ‘profound’ moods today, so before you decide to close this little window, we shall move on to the outfit (which was what I was trying to get at with my first sentence, and then I rambled on). The dress is by my blogger buddy Agam from Trimmings and Lace (remember her guest post here?) It’s a really pretty, delicate little thing in a pleasant pastel yellow. It’s part of her Trimmings and Lace collection, and the best part is, you specify whatever specific changes/alterations you want and she’ll have it ready even better than the mental picture in your head. Customizable to the T! What more can a girl ask for right? The color of the dress and the almost-tea-length length of it reminded me of an evening soiree – good food, good music and great conversations. I could use an evening like that!

How to: Personalize your fashion blog

Blogging, how-to
personalize your fahshion blog, fashion blogging tips, indian fashion blog, top indian fashion blog, hyderabad fashion blog
We all love bloggers with a fantastic sense of style. And when such a blogger is also capable of making you smile or burst into giggles, that’s just icing on the cake. Here’s how you can add a personal/humorous touch to your posts.
1) Make up a story
You are wearing your prettiest skirt and blouse, you have stunning pictures ready to post but your mind draws a blank at what to write. Spin a yarn! Make up a story about how you met your skirt (just don’t make it as long as HIMYM). Add a fun element to your post. Being silly sometimes helps!
2) Share your thoughts/ opinions
Read an interesting article yesterday? Saw a tweet that sparked off a debate in your mind? You have a few more points to add to someone else’s post?
Make a post out of it (and give credit to the source). If you want to personalize your fashion blog, you don’t always have to talk about fashion. Let your readers into your mind. Let them know your way of thinking, your opinions on issues.
3) Add a bit of humor
Make people laugh. Sarcasm, satire, and witty one-liners – they all work!
4) Make fun of yourself
This is an instant icebreaker. There is nothing more delightful than knowing the other person is as big a klutz as you are. Readers will connect to you and love you instantly. But don’t go overboard and sound like a fool!
5) Skip writing boring and monotonous descriptions about your clothes
“I decided to wear my new shoes for the party. I paired it with so and so and completed the look with this and that…”. I’ve already skipped reading and gone to the next blog after a quick look at your pictures. If you want comments which are more meaningful than just ‘Nice post’ or ‘Awesome outfit’, you’ve got give more meaningful content.
6) Scriptwriting
This is my favorite and is totally fun to read.
Had a hilarious conversation with your friend? Overheard two people talk about something really funny?
Writing, “I said” “She said” posts are really fun to read.
Like this one for example.
Monica : Rach, its the visa card people
Rachel : Oh, God ask them what they want!
Monica : Could you please tell me what this is in reference to? Yes hold on.
Umm.. they say there’s been some unusual activity on your account
Rachel : But I haven’t used my card in weeks
Monica : That is the unusual activity
Just don’t quote FRIENDS, but write your own conversation.
Keep it light-hearted and have fun with words!

It’s funny how sometimes the most mundane and unexpected things make such pretty accessories. This pink bow belt is actually a tie which I found in my sister’s husband’s closet. A slim pink tie which I have no idea why he had in the first place! I grabbed it for myself and have been using it as a belt ever since. Inspiration is all around us and ideas are waiting to burst from the ordinary, the plain and the boring. It just takes a new pair of eyes and a little curiosity to discover them.

On a different note, by May I will be completing another year of fashion blogging and I feel so happy to still be doing something that I love, that keeps my creativity engaged (and contributes to my wallet!). When I look at people around me constantly cribbing about lack of time to pursue their passion, I am overcome with a sense of overwhelming gratitude that I have the time, inclination and resources to do whatever I want, whatever I love. The busiest man always has the time for everything. If you have the inclination, you will somehow find a way to do what you love, although I believe that  timing too, has an essential part to play. Be it painting or blogging or writing, I am able to do what I love every single day, and it’s a great feeling!

I see so many of my friends get inspired and start something, only to lose heart and stop mid-way. Most cases that I see are due to pure laziness and procrastination, and nothing major. And as expected, they regret it, start again and the same cycle continues. Not many are blessed with a second opportunity, so I urge every single person reading this – if you have something that you are extremely passionate about, if that is something you dream and think about day and night, make time for it! Because that’s one regret no one should never have.

Fashion blogging and sensible shopping!

Blogging, Fashion, Look of the Day, thoughts
I feel the time has finally come to start revamping my wardrobe. For the longest time (almost an year) I’ve refrained from buying any new pieces, except for one or two basics here and there which I needed. When I initially started with fashion blogging, I went into a shopping frenzy, buying things that I thought were needed, only to realize later that they were never really ‘investment pieces’. It took a while to get a hang of the whole remixing of clothes business and contrary to the popular belief that style blogging makes people blow off a lot of money and indulge in frequent retail therapy, it had the opposite effect on me. I learnt to make the best use of my existing clothes, by shopping very little (I’ve even tried my hand at designing and making my own clothes). The fact that I maintain my clothes well, and haven’t really changed in size since college days also helps!

Since I had stuffed so many useless pieces into my closet, it rewarded me in the exact same way every time I wanted to dress up in something nice. In-spite of having so many clothes I never found anything appropriate for any occasion. More than half my clothes lay untouched, and the other half felt too boring and repetitive. After many self-imposed shopping bans, ridding my closet of some clothes, sorting the rest and a resolve to repair the damage done, I’ve finally arrived there! I am no longer interested in shopping. For the past two months, I’ve been trying so hard to shop but I don’t seem to find anything interesting. Even if I do, its just an initial rush which dies down in a couple of days.

I guess I am truly happy with what I have already, even if it means re-using and re-styling the same old pieces. In fact that’s more challenging and exciting. This pair of trousers is one such piece that has stayed with me for almost four years and can you believe its non branded? (and it still fits like a glove yes! muhahaha!). But of course shopping is something that we girls can never live without, so I’m still on the lookout for something that will catch my eye and make it to my wishlist. Certainly looking forward to adding some exciting new pieces this year! 🙂

How to: Five ways to wear a black pencil skirt

Blogging, Fashion, how-to, Look of the Day, Remix
Poor little pencil skirt. After the round of interviews, for which it had been purchased and used, it lay there in a corner of my wardrobe, literally crushed and forgotten. Having followed no formal dress code in college or work for the past three years (except for presentations, interviews, or other ‘formal’ events) I’ve blissfully ignored them all for most part. Recently after yet another I-need-a-new skirt excuse of online shopping, I decided to pull out this ever popular classic piece, determined to use it to its full potential.

For those of you wanting to give your formal skirts a more casual or classy spin, these are just a few ideas to get you started. I had three more outfits to shoot but testing my photographer’s patience is never a good option, so that’s reserved for a future post. ‘kay?

Look 1:
Colorful candy colored blouse with a loose fit, since it’s a fitted pencil skirt, side swept hair and your favorite pair of heels. I feel a very false sense of gracefulness wearing this, which am not!

Look 2:
For a really unusual yet flattering look, pair a (short) kurti with your pencil skirt. Perfect juxtaposition of  Indian formal with western formal. Cinched waist with a thin or broad belt and nude sandals add the finishing touch! (I threw in chunky earrings too)

Look 3:
I don’t know what to call this but this is my kind of look. Skull tee – love it. Fitted colorful blazer – looove it. Layered necklace – *swoon*
Seriously I’d wear this anywhere.

Look 4:
Denim screams casual, right? Side note: never quite understood why clothes have to ‘scream’ anything.. I’m all for whispered tones than blowing someone’s ear drum off. Anyway, reallyyy messy braid, casual tee, casual sandals, casual denim shirt thrown on… casual everything.. casual coffee with me?

Look 5:
Another favorite of mine – black on black. Elegant, powerful, strong, smart, confident, I could go on and on about this combination. Black always makes me think of gold, so a hint of gold, a pair of heels and I am superwoman (for me!)

Floral with white

Blogging, Fashion, floral, Look of the Day, thoughts
When I said that I was almost always the last person to follow fashion trends I wasn’t kidding. I first spotted the floral jeans trend on bloggers in 2012. I din’t like the bold prints at all back then but then the colors got a bit softer, subtler and here I am embracing the trend in good old present 2014. That was quick right? I was totally fine with colored jeans, and although throughout my childhood I’d associated certain colors in pants with circus clowns, I was quite willing to experiment and stray away from the boring black and blue. But when it came to prints on pants, it took me a while to warm up to the idea.

Even now there are some prints that I could never wear like snake skin. Why would anyone want to feel like they have a slimy reptile skin wrapped tight around their legs? Or feet? We all have our concept of beauty, fashion and luxury but that, to me, is just cruelty –  NOT luxury. There are certain things that make me uncomfortable and I simply cannot overlook them in the name of fashion! I read this article sometime back, it’s not the first of its kind nor the last, but as always it made me sick to the core. Stop aping trends blindly. Stop ‘oohhing’ and ‘aahhhing’ just because they are Gucci python boots. The next time I hear a person bragging about how exotic their snake skin bag/pants/boots look, with no idea as to what they are even talking about, they’ll end up with a python around their neck at the bottom of a snake pit! Same goes for any other exotic animal that is slaughtered in the name of fashion.

And on that sweet note, let’s move on to the pictures 😀
