How to: Five ways to wear a black pencil skirt

Blogging, Fashion, how-to, Look of the Day, Remix
Poor little pencil skirt. After the round of interviews, for which it had been purchased and used, it lay there in a corner of my wardrobe, literally crushed and forgotten. Having followed no formal dress code in college or work for the past three years (except for presentations, interviews, or other ‘formal’ events) I’ve blissfully ignored them all for most part. Recently after yet another I-need-a-new skirt excuse of online shopping, I decided to pull out this ever popular classic piece, determined to use it to its full potential.

For those of you wanting to give your formal skirts a more casual or classy spin, these are just a few ideas to get you started. I had three more outfits to shoot but testing my photographer’s patience is never a good option, so that’s reserved for a future post. ‘kay?

Look 1:
Colorful candy colored blouse with a loose fit, since it’s a fitted pencil skirt, side swept hair and your favorite pair of heels. I feel a very false sense of gracefulness wearing this, which am not!

Look 2:
For a really unusual yet flattering look, pair a (short) kurti with your pencil skirt. Perfect juxtaposition of  Indian formal with western formal. Cinched waist with a thin or broad belt and nude sandals add the finishing touch! (I threw in chunky earrings too)

Look 3:
I don’t know what to call this but this is my kind of look. Skull tee – love it. Fitted colorful blazer – looove it. Layered necklace – *swoon*
Seriously I’d wear this anywhere.

Look 4:
Denim screams casual, right? Side note: never quite understood why clothes have to ‘scream’ anything.. I’m all for whispered tones than blowing someone’s ear drum off. Anyway, reallyyy messy braid, casual tee, casual sandals, casual denim shirt thrown on… casual everything.. casual coffee with me?

Look 5:
Another favorite of mine – black on black. Elegant, powerful, strong, smart, confident, I could go on and on about this combination. Black always makes me think of gold, so a hint of gold, a pair of heels and I am superwoman (for me!)

Floral with white

Blogging, Fashion, floral, Look of the Day, thoughts
When I said that I was almost always the last person to follow fashion trends I wasn’t kidding. I first spotted the floral jeans trend on bloggers in 2012. I din’t like the bold prints at all back then but then the colors got a bit softer, subtler and here I am embracing the trend in good old present 2014. That was quick right? I was totally fine with colored jeans, and although throughout my childhood I’d associated certain colors in pants with circus clowns, I was quite willing to experiment and stray away from the boring black and blue. But when it came to prints on pants, it took me a while to warm up to the idea.

Even now there are some prints that I could never wear like snake skin. Why would anyone want to feel like they have a slimy reptile skin wrapped tight around their legs? Or feet? We all have our concept of beauty, fashion and luxury but that, to me, is just cruelty –  NOT luxury. There are certain things that make me uncomfortable and I simply cannot overlook them in the name of fashion! I read this article sometime back, it’s not the first of its kind nor the last, but as always it made me sick to the core. Stop aping trends blindly. Stop ‘oohhing’ and ‘aahhhing’ just because they are Gucci python boots. The next time I hear a person bragging about how exotic their snake skin bag/pants/boots look, with no idea as to what they are even talking about, they’ll end up with a python around their neck at the bottom of a snake pit! Same goes for any other exotic animal that is slaughtered in the name of fashion.

And on that sweet note, let’s move on to the pictures 😀

There’s a reason I am fascinated by beaches. The very thing that is considered the epitome of soothing, calm and serene can, in an instant, turn into the most violent, merciless and relentless being (so to speak) ever. When you look at a calm sea, it is next to impossible to imagine those gentle waves as being ruthless and stormy, trashing about, threatening to plunge anything in their path into its depths. The calm before the storm, the calm after the storm and all that in between. It’s a miraculous transformation!

Quite like some people’s (by which I obviously mean me) moods. Some people have the most deceivingly calm exterior! Everything is sweet and rosy on the surface but you never know what kind of fierce volcanic eruption is about to happen. Occasionally you might see a few bubbles rising up to the surface but before you can look again, there are gentle ripples in the water and you are left thinking your eyes are playing tricks on you. Its only after the eruption happens and the water gets boiling hot with fire balls raining down on you that you realize you have sorely underestimated the person! Yeah we are one of a kind. And not easy to handle 😉

Anyway, this skirt is the fourth of my designs, which I wore on one such evening for dinner by the beach. One moment it was a lazy, peaceful evening with the sea breeze blowing  and delicious hot food in front of us. And five minutes later we were all shivering and disheveled with hair that looked like a bird’s nest munching on soggy pasta. The only good thing about that night was that I got to debut my self-designed printed pencil skirt and later snuggle in bed with a coffee in hand.

I am the last person to follow fashion trends. No. Like literally the last person. So I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this pencil skirt which I’d designed months back happened to be ‘the’ color of the year. A skirt in a color that reminds you of sunsets splashed with random colors of hot pinks, reds with hints of purple, a pretty lace blouse and comfy flats and you are all set for an evening by the beach!

Indian kaffe express

delicious days, Food, pondicherry, Travel, weekend
When you can’t afford to take long and expensive holidays, weekend getaways are the best. If only I could hop, skip, jump and end up at exotic locations like Greece or Spain as and when I wanted! It’s good to dream but equally important to know when to stop and get on with living in the present. So until I can make that happen on my own terms, I am perfectly satisfied with any number of mini-vacations, as long as I get to travel somewhere!

A vacation to Pondy makes sense only if you are planning on staying over for at least four days, out of which you are willing to properly eat out for at least… well… four days! Pondy offers a lot in terms of different cuisines and cozy cafes. The beaches are okay but the main focal point is on the food. Two of my favorite places, without a doubt are the Indian Kaffe Express and Cafe Xtasi. The former for pancakes, crepes and parathas (they are to die for!) and the latter for their fire wood oven pizzas.

It’s on a calm street away from the hustle and bustle of the city. For some reason it’s never crowded when am there, except for one or two people tucked away in a corner sipping a drink and reading a book. Calm and peaceful with tasteful interiors and mouth watering food – no wonder I love it!

Travel: Pondicherry

2014!!! Eeeee! *does a dance* It’s not like me to get excited for a new year but this time it somehow feels different. It’s heart warming to read some of my fellow bloggers’ new year resolutions/plans/goals posts. Although a lot of them are also of the resolutions are passe and not for me opinion too. I don’t understand why some people are so against new year resolutions. I get that you can start something new any day, anytime and you don’t specifically need to wait for a new year to begin to change your life around. But do you start ? Really?? If you do then hats off to you, but me being the world’s biggest procrastinator I need something like this to give me a much needed push in the right direction.

Each day and every moment is a chance to learn something new and change something about your life that you aren’t satisfied with but, there is something about beginning a whole new year with a set of goals, a change in attitude and with those so called ‘resolutions’ that makes the future seem more… promising.

This year began with a mini holiday where I attended the mega alumni meet of my college, caught up with friends (and enemies 😉), walked around our awesome campus (which is like second home), talked about old times, laughed about the things we did, the hectic schedules and all the parties, outings and late night cups of coffee while trying to read up on case studies and basically had a blast! A visit to my alma matter is always incomplete without a trip to Pondicherry. This little beach town which was never ever on my radar before, has now become a favorite getaway – mostly thanks to the various delicious eating joints and cafes that it has.

Just about an hour and a half from our campus along the East Coast Road, which in my opinion happens to be one of the best scenic roads ever, and you land in this little french colony city!
